Phase 2: Assessment

Phase 2 of the project will be a model inter-comparison experiment which will inform the next generation biogeochemical model hierarchy by providing the basis for assessment of the current state-of-the-art within the UK. 

Previous model intercomparisons have identified the importance of ocean physics but here we will build a set of experiments to highlight the role of marine ecosystems.

Various candidate models will be compared in a common general circulation model, with the same forcing and initialisation where possible.  The first stage will be to undertake a reanalysis-forced hindcast experiment and secondly each model will be the subject of a 240-year forced run to quantify the model response to climate change.

Further analysis of the simulations will then be undertaken to synthesise the results and the baseline model will be further developed for implementation into the earth systems model.
